On April 30, 2012, before I applied my Overseas Exit Clearance (OEC) at Philippine Overseas employment Agency main building at Ortigas Avenue, I tried to withdraw P5,000 to have enough money for paying OEC fees. There is no BPI ATM inside POEA but there are other ATMs like Land Bank, and branch offices of Banco de Oro and MetroBank.
I know there is a Land Bank ATM inside so I have no problem withdrawing money even if I’m a BPI customer. I have been doing it several times before and I have not encountered any problem.
However, for the first time, I experienced a problem withdrawing money from my BPI account using Land Bank ATM. I know I used the right PIN in withdrawing my money but the ATM gave an error message of “UNABLE TO PROCESS”.
Because of that message, I understand that operation was not completed and the money was still in my account. However, when I tried to withdraw at BPI Robinsons Galleria, it was successful and I noticed that my balance is not correct and suspected that the P5,000 was debited in Land Bank ATM.
I and my wife confirmed the transaction and the error by logging it to our BPI Express Online. I computed the money that should be in my account, it must be around P9, 000 but the balance in the receipt indicated P4, 000 only.
Finding and Making a Solution
The first solution I and my wife made was for her to go to Land Bank branch near POEA since I will apply for OEC. My wife went to Land Bank near the POEA and I went inside to get my OEC. After finishing my application, I and my wife meet again and she said that she filed a complaint about the problem we encountered.
The lady in Land Bank told her that it normally happens and the money will be returned automatically to the account after one day. But, we checked our BPI account balance after 1 and 2 days but it is still not returned.
So, we have decided to go to the BPI branch where our account is located. My wife explained what happened and the lady in the bank had the same solution to the problem. She gave my wife a complaint form about the error happened. She said that it usually takes 2 weeks before the money will return to the account. That’s a long time of waiting but we cannot do anything but to wait.
We are still hoping that the money will return immediately because we really need the money. So, we checked our balance on May 6, and to our surprise, it was returned on our account. It took only 3 days after we filed the report on the error on our ATM withdrawal.
If you have the same problem, the fastest way to get your money back is to go to your BPI or your bank’s branch, tell the problem to the bank employee, and after that she will give you a complaint or report form which you need to fill out.
Make sure you bring the receipt of your transaction so you have evidence that there was really an error in withdrawing your money. Don’t throw it to the trash can, save it for future reference.
