It is a difficult time when you are laid off in your job especially if it is your only source of income and you don’t have enough savings to cover your monthly expenses. Maybe you’re feeling several negative emotions like fear and loneliness because of that situation.

Perhaps you know that I am a contractual worker in my current company and somewhat it is not good situation for me since I am bounded with the contract. Anytime I can be laid off from my work when bad situation happens to the company.

The good thing about this company I’m working right now is that it gives severance allowance every month of your stay with the company. It is the amount of money given to an employee if she will resign, lay off or go on retirement so they have sufficient money to cover expenses during period of no job. The portion of that allowance will be doubled by the company.

It is overwhelming condition if you were laid off and you are not ready in terms of your finances and many other things. Here are some of the suggestions that might help you to make things better and do productive things when you are laid off.

1. It is not the end of the world

Losing a job is tough but it is not the end of the world and it is not the end of you. Don’t think that you are a loser when you are laid off. You have other skills that you can use to rebound.

Probably, you know some famous people who are laid off in the past but they rebound and do better things. One example is Steve Job who was fired by Apple and then established another company, Pixar and then went back again to Apple as CEO.

Another one good example is Pat Flynn, the blogger behind the Smart Passive Income blog, who was laid off in year 2008 because of economic recession in the US. Maybe, if he was not laid off, he may not create the blog that helps many bloggers around the world.

As you can see, it is not the end if you when you lose your job. You can do other things that can give you income like the knowledge and skills that you have. Be resourceful and don’t procrastinate, you can do better things than just lying around.

2. Do not lose hope

Hope is the fuel that makes us move and achieve things what we want. If you have no hope, it will be harder for you to look for ways on how to make your life better in spite of a job loss.

You need to have a hope so that you can continue on the journey; otherwise, you will be overwhelmed and stop. Hope that things will be better and not worse.

3. Identify your profitable skills

All of us have skills that we can offer to other people. Perhaps you can make money from it. For example, if you can teach something to other people, you may offer your services with a price and announce it to your community, in the Internet or friends.

I know at first it will not give you the same amount of money you’re getting from your job but definitely it will help a lot to add funds to your monthly expenses. Just make sure that you are offering a good service that your clients and customers will be satisfied.

Some people can offer consultancy or do freelance works. I know there are several websites that pays you for freelance jobs that you can do. Most of the freelance works in the Internet world are computer programming, web design, article writing, blogging, and even interior design of houses. You can visit these sites so you can have more info:

Moreover, I want to add about the hobbies that you have. Some people are earning money from that because they make it valuable to other people. If you have hobbies that you think can be helpful to other people and you have the means to teach it, I believe there will be no problem to make money from it.

4. Start applying for a new job

If you don’t want to be self-employed or do business on your own, you must start applying for a job right now. The easiest way to do this is to send your resume to your friends and acquaintances telling them that you are in need of a job. Maybe they know some job openings and refer you to the right person.

In addition, begin editing your resume to make it updated. You can send your resume in the popular job hunting sites and even to your prospect companies. This may require long hours of updating and sending of resume. Make sure to double check the information you are putting on your resume before sending it.

I know it’s hard to apply again for another job but if you will do nothing, you have the zero or very little chance of being employed. Act and start now to get a new job!

5. Make a blog

Many people are earning decent income from their blogs. Maybe you don’t know how to start a blog but I tell you it is easier than what you think. I think blogging will be better for people who love writing and sharing their experiences to other people, however, you can still make blog and make money from it even if you’re not good in writing. I’m a good example of that person.

If you would like to start your own blog but you don’t know how and where to start, I can help you. Simply visit this post that I made before to learn more.

I just want to tell you that you cannot make quick cash on blogging and most of the time it will require several months or years before you reap the fruit of your labor. It is not suitable for persons who want quick money. However, if you can set a difference and make reachable goal, you can really make money from the blog you have.

So that’s all in my list. I hope you learned something from this post. If you have other tips in mind, please leave your comment below. I would appreciate it if you do.

I guess another thing to do when being laid off is to study whether your case is a good subject of legal action. Aside from the chance of being reinstated to work, backwages may even be claimed.

Hi Amy,

Yes, it is true. You have to know whether it is legal or not for you to be laid off from your job.
